Most of what you're clearing out can go straight in the dumpster. But Michigan landfills don't accept certain materials, and putting them in can lead to fees or a load being rejected. Here's the quick guide.
Good to go
- Household junk, furniture and boxes
- Construction and remodel debris — drywall, lumber, flooring, cabinets
- Asphalt roofing shingles
- Yard waste, brush and limbs
- Appliances that don't contain freon (washers, dryers, stoves)
- Tires ($15 each) and mattresses ($50 each)
Keep these out
- Paint, stains, solvents and household chemicals
- Motor oil, gasoline and automotive fluids
- Car and household batteries
- Electronics — TVs, computers, monitors
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
- Refrigerators, freezers and A/C units (freon)
- Asbestos and medical waste
Ionia County periodically hosts household hazardous waste collection days for paint, chemicals and electronics. Check with the county before tossing anything on the "keep out" list.
Heavy materials: ask first
Concrete, brick, dirt and stone can be accepted in small amounts, but they hit the 10,000 lb weight limit quickly. Call us at 616-522-7541 before loading heavy material and we'll help you plan.
